Incredible Hulk -- my review
It's moot now since the geek blogosphere has already gone to see this... but I'll put down some brief words on the film.

I had a lot of fun with it even though I think Hulk drags a bit when it comes to the romance. However, it's miles ahead of Ang Lee's unfun 2003 tone-poem.

Best of all, no lichen shots!

The visual effects artists do a so-so job with cgi Hulk, Ed Norton does a decent job as Banner, William Hurt does a better one as General Ross, and Liv Tyler somehow made Betty Ross live and breathe for me as a character I cared about. Overall, the film succeeds as a fugitive-thriller story as much as it does a superhero movie.

And, I can't help but point out, I had more fun with this film than Iron Man. Yes, Iron Man has wittier banter... but IM is essentially a "solved" character by the middle of the movie and the 2nd half is a run-through of a lame-ass super-villain plot. At least Hulk gives us much more of a build-up to the movie's villain ( Tim Roth does a great job with a mediocre part) and kudos to Hulk for giving/re-writing the Hulk's origin in a masterpiece of montage.

Yeah, kudos to Tim Roth. From the trailer, his part looked completely lame, and I assumed would be a throw away all the way until the final transformation. But he surprised me. Liv and Ed surprised me too. I didn't see him fitting Bruce Banner at all, but by the end with the last shot of him, he was Bruce.

Everyone was saying that it ignored the first one. I didn't see that. I mean, it kind of did, but only in the way that a new artist and writer team ignores specifics of the previous team to bring back favorite characters in comic book universes. In fact, I saw it as a direct sequel. He was still in South America (at least 156 days after the closing scene in the first movie, in fact) on the run. It recaps the origin from the first movie in the opening montage, with our new actors. It was handled perfectly.

Of course I think it's all the better for it, because the first movie kicks ass. I was worried they would seek to alienate those of us who loved the first movie. The first was more true to Hulk stand alone stories. This Hulk was a clearer set up to put him more in line for an Avengers team up (where the fuck did this parcour shit come from instead of his superleap?).

Although I haven't yet digested the new one enough to decide which is better.

I liked it, as well. My favorite bit was probably the fight in the park; the duel between the pistol-wielding Roth and the Hulk made me want a Deadpool movie (and yeah, I'm aware that will probably never happen). And despite the fact that I basically loathe Liv Tyler, I actually enjoyed the awkward tension betwen her and Norton in their first few scenes together.

I do think the film lacked personality. Much as I enjoyed it, there was a certain by-the-numbers quality to it that prevented me from embracing it whole-heartedly.
